Helping Canadians grow healthy
Canada needs to rethink a food system that brings a big helping of greenhouse gas emissions with every meal. Canadians should not have to look across oceans or continents for foods we could be growing in our own backyard. Canada should be adopting agricultural practices that reduce dependence on fossil fuels – for fertilizers, pesticides, machinery and shipping -- as well as promoting less meat intensive diets that are healthier and have lower carbon footprints. Farmers must have the resources they need to produce the best possible products, including meeting the rapidly growing demand for organic and nutritious foodstuffs.
And no Canadian should have to think twice before raising their water glass – the federal government must act to help protect the quality of our drinking water and end the scandal of leaving First Nation communities without safe water to drink.
- Help Canadians reduce the climate and environmental impact of what they eat by supporting local food networks, helping Canadian farmers adopt conservation-based and organic farming practices, and amending Canada's Food Guide to provide information about the climate impacts of food choices.
- Let Canadians make smart food choices with mandatory labeling policies that include information on nutrition, country of origin, fair-trade practices, organic standards and genetic modification content.
- End the discrimination -- and human health disaster – created by unsafe drinking water supplies in First Nation and Inuit communities by creating well funded action plans to protect water sources and supply systems.
- Conserve water resources and protect drinking water through a Canada-wide strategy that includes water-efficiency standards for appliances, enhanced prohibitions on bulk water exports, and binding drinking water and wastewater standards.
